Background of the Study
Goodluck Jonathan’s administration prioritized the development of Nigeria’s education sector, with a particular focus on improving primary education. As the foundation of the educational system, primary education plays a crucial role in shaping the intellectual and social development of children, especially in rural and underserved regions. Jonathan’s administration launched various initiatives aimed at expanding access to primary education, improving infrastructure, and enhancing teacher quality. These initiatives included the introduction of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program, which aimed to provide free, compulsory, and quality education for all children, as well as efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children across the country.
In Jalingo, the capital city of Taraba State, primary education has faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of qualified teachers, and high dropout rates, especially in rural areas. Jonathan’s policies were designed to address these issues by increasing the allocation of funds for primary education, improving access to educational resources, and enhancing school facilities. This study aims to evaluate the impact of Jonathan’s primary education policies on the quality of education, student enrollment, and retention rates in Jalingo’s primary schools.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the various policies introduced by the Jonathan administration, there remains a significant gap in the quality of primary education in many parts of Nigeria, including Jalingo. Issues such as poor infrastructure, inadequate training for teachers, and limited access to educational materials continue to undermine the effectiveness of primary education policies in the region. This study seeks to investigate how Jonathan’s policies have been implemented in Jalingo, and whether they have led to measurable improvements in education outcomes such as school enrollment, retention, and academic performance.
